    In this session, we will dive into tier 1 and tier 2 of the Pyramid Model to gain a better understanding of how to set children up for success and how to proactively teach social emotional literacy, rather than being reactive to unwanted behaviors. We will begin by discussing the components of a high-quality supportive environment, and how to ensure that our classroom is set up with those as the foundation. We will take the time to evaluate our classroom environment, and plan for any needed changes. We will also learn the importance of developing nurturing and responsive relationships with each child in the classroom, as a safe, secure relationships are the foundation to learning.

    Early childhood environments play a pivotal role in the growth and development of the children within them. When thoughtfully planned and utilized, they act as another adult in the room. Effective early childhood environments provide an engaging environment for children by offering opportunities for individualized teaching and learning; plenty of interesting, accessible materials; and enhanced child participation in play, learning, and development. What is a high-quality learning environment and why is it so important to establish and maintain? Participants will examine the expectations of a high-quality learning environment and practice assessing their learning environment and plan how to implement the changes to meet the developmental needs of the children in their care and to meet the highest quality standards.

    When children have independence and leadership within the environment, they are more likely to exhibit positive behavior. Using proactive behavior assistance, allowing children to help set expectations, and holding children accountable takes intentional planning and effective facilitation on the caregiver’s part. We will look at how caregivers can become facilitators and share the day-to-day operations with the children, which in turn, frees them up so that they can take advantage of teachable moments.

    Now that we have a solid foundation with the understanding of the importance of setting up a high-quality supportive learning environment and how to develop supportive, responsive relationships with all children, we will now dive into the third tier of the pyramid model to gain a better understanding of challenging behaviors. We will discuss how to provide intensive intervention for those few children exhibiting challenging behavior and gain an understanding of why some children use challenging behavior to express wants and needs. We will practice identifying the trigger, form, and function to help the child be more successful within the environment, activity, or interactions. It is NOT required to have completed Part 1 in order to complete Part 2 of this series.

    The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) are offering virtual training for parents, caregivers, and families on the mental health needs of children!

     

    ACF and SAMHSA are both committed to improving behavioral health (mental health and substance use) for children, youth, and families. As part of our agencies’ ongoing behavioral health efforts, this March 22nd training aims to provide parents and caregivers with the information and resources to recognize, manage, and support their children’s mental health needs.

     

    Event facilitators and speakers will include ACF Assistant Secretary January Contreras, SAMHSA Assistant Secretary Miriam Delphin-Rittmon, Dr. Sunny Patel (Senior Medical Advisor, SAMHSA Center for Mental Health), Dr. Gary Blau (Senior Advisor, SAMHSA), Lauren Behsudi (Senior Advisor, ACF), David Armstrong (parent and caregiver advocate) and Arc Telos Saint Amour (Executive Director, Youth MOVE National).

    The Paths to QUALITY™(PTQ) Introduction Session is designed to provide you with all the information you will need in order to participate in Indiana’s quality rating and improvement system. You will learn about the four levels of participation, the enrollment process, mentoring options, rater visits, incentives and awards. This webinar is for the administrators/owners of licensed child care programs (or unlicensed registered child care ministries who have completed the Voluntary Certification Program) who are interested in enrolling their program in PTQ OR child care providers who are considering becoming licensed and plan to enroll in PTQ. Participating in this training MEETS the requirement to enroll in PTQ. This training DOES NOT meet in-service hours for PTQ. This training DOES meet in-service hours for licensing.
